How To Be Happier
22 Proven Methods Of How To Be Happier
Incorporating even a few of these practices into your daily routine can lead to noticeable improvements in happiness over time.
Start using our 22 tips to help you be happier, be more in control, and be able to cope better with life’s ups and downs.
- Manage your stress levels. All of us feel stress, whether it is cause by school work, office pressures, or family situations. You can find ways to reduce stress, and also learn time management techniques
- Start having a regular exercise routine, and time for yourself. These are important because taking control of your time can effectively reduce your stress levels. Even moderate exercise releases chemicals in your brain that lift your mood. It can help you sleep better, have mor energy, and keep your heart healthy. Choose an exercise that you enjoy, and aim for at least 150 minutes a week. Even a daily walk can make a difference. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which can boost your mood
- Breathing techniques can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress
- Practical self-help cognitive behavioural therapy techniques can help you solve problems and build resilience
- Enjoy yourself. When you do things that you enjoy, your emotional well-being improves
- Simple activities like watching sports with a friend, taking a long relaxing shower, or meeting with friends for a delicious meal can all improve your day
- Doing something that you are good at like cooking, singing, craft, or dancing is an effective way to enjoy yourself and have a sense of achievement. Engaging in activities that you enjoy and that stimulate your creativity and passion will definitely help you feel happier
- Try to avoid doing things that seem enjoyable at the time but will soon make you feel worse afterwards, like eating junk food
- Self-esteem is the way you feel about yourself. A good way to improve your self-esteem is to treat yourself the way you would treat a close friend – in a positive and honest way
- Instead of saying to yourself: “You are so stupid for messing up on those recent pages of homework”, you should ask yourself if you would say these same words to your best friend. Most probably not. So, you should not say these to yourself because these words are very hurting and damaging to your self-esteem
- Instead, tell yourself: “You are very bright and hardworking. You will get it absolutely right the next time you do your homework.”
- Choose a well-balanced diet. Healthy food does not always need to taste bland and boring. When you make healthy choices about your diet, you will feel emotionally stronger. You will know that you are doing something positive for yourself, and this will increase your self-esteem
- A good diet helps your brain and body to work efficiently, so you should aim to eat a balanced diet that includes all the main food groups
- Get enough sleep. Most adults need between 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, in order for their body and mind to have adequate rest. Quality sleep is vital for mental and emotional health
- Talk to friends and relatives. Having a social network is important, whether you prefer your network to include friends, family members, or church members. When you talk through your concerns with members of your social network, you can release tension instead of keeping it inside you. Communications help strengthen your relationships and connect better with people. This is crucial for emotional well-being
- Resilience is what enables you to cope with life’s ups and downs. When you can overcome painful times, your resilience grows. Try making something creative out of bad experiences for example by writing, painting, or singing. Through these, you can express your pain and get through hard times
- Practice gratitude. Regularly take time to reflect on or write down things that you are grateful for. This can shift your focus on what you don’t have, to what you already have
- Mindfulness and meditation. Practicing meditation and mindfulness can help reduce stress and promote a sense of peace and contentment
- Limit the time you spend online. When you reduce the time you spend on social media, you can reduce feelings of anxiety and dissatisfaction
- Help others. Volunteering, or helping others in need can boost your mood and provide a sense of fulfillment
- Set small goals. Achieving small, manageable goals can provide you with a sense of accomplishment and progress
- Spend time in nature. Nature has a calming effect can improve your mood. Try to spend more time outdoors regularly
