Authentic High Quality Nyonya Food And Kueh
Nonya food can be found in Singapore, Penang, and Melaka.
Being closer to Thailand, Nyonya food in Penang tends to be more spicy and sour – because of the inclusion of tamarind, pineapple, chilli, and lemongrass.
Popular Nyonya dishes from Penang are Sour Asam Laksa, Ayam Kapitan, Perut Idan (spicy fish stew), and various types of Kerabu (salads).
Nyonya cuisine from Melaka and Singapore uses more coconut milk – which makes the sauces creamier and richer – and rempah (spice pastes).
Signature Nyonya dishes from Melaka and Singapore reflect influences from Indonesia and include Otak Otak, Popiah, Babi Pongteh, creamy Laksa Lemak, Ayam Buah Keluak, Bakwan Kepiting, Udang Masak Lemak Nenas, Ikan Tempra, and Itik Sioh.
Generally, Nyonya recipes combine local and Indian spices and use cooking techniques of the Malay and Indonesian communities.
Nyonya food is an interpretation of Malay and Indonesian food that are reminiscent of Chinese, Thai, Eurasian, and Indian cultures and cuisine.
The Peranakan cultures in Melaka, Singapore, and Penang have created traditional cakes – also known as kueh, kue, or kue-mueh.
Some of the better known are lepak kacan, Nyonya bak chang, ang ku kueh, kue tae or nastar, kueh ku hitam, apom balik, kue kochi, kueh bakol, tapae, kue bongkong, rempah udang, kue gulong, pulot enti, kueh kapit, galeng galoh, kueh bolu, seri muka, kueh banket, and many other variants.
Kueh genggang is also typically known as kueh lapis. It is a multi-layered cake that is a staple of Chinese New Year treats because it symbolizes a ladder of continued prosperity.
It is likely that Singapore Peranakans have ancestors that were Chinese traders who traveled to Melaka during the 15th century, and they married local women.
Peranakan men are known as baba, and women are known as nonya or nyonya.
We love Nyonya food, and we love the range and quality that can be found at HarriAnns Nonya Table.

Uncle Harry and Auntie Annie are the founders of HarriAnns Nonya Table.
It started with a simple wooden push-cart that peddled freshly-made Nonya Kueh and Glutinous Rice in the Tiong Bahru district.
In 1950, they established their stall at Tiong Bahru Food Centre. Uncle Harry and Auntie Annie are still welcoming customers at this flagship location.
Authentic Peranakan food at HarriAnns is crafted using cherished family recipes that have been lovingly passed down for three generations.
Crowd favourites are their Signature Nonya Laksa, Curry Chicken, and Mee Siam.
Popular side dishes are their Mackeral Otah, Kueh Pie Tee, and Chup Chye.
All of these are complemented by freshly-brewed Signature Traditional Nanyang Kopi and Teh, healthy home-made drinks like Fuzhu Barly, Longan and Red Date, and Lemongrass with Aiyu Jelly.
Their Nyonya kueh are made from scratch in their kitchen using the freshest premium ingredients.
Minimal sugar is added to their kuehs, where maximum tastes are retained, while the reduced sugar is a very attractive option for the health-conscious.
Five star hotels like The Shangri-La, The Fullerton Hotel, and the Pan Pacific regularly feature food and kueh from HarriAnns.
